To cut down stomach discomfort, I have jumped on the plant protein bandwagon. I have always been a tad lactose intolerant but it was easier to ignore the symptoms than to cut it out. I am at least cutting back by switch most smoothies to plant protein and not using cow milk for coffee and cereal. It has been a lot easier than I thought it would be and I am already seeing results.
I researched what would work best for me. Soy has the possibility of disrupting hormones. Pea or bean protein seemed like it would be to ‘heavy” feeling in my stomach. Hemp seemed strange to me but it had so many benefits that it was hard to pass up. It is high in fiber, low in carbs, and full of amino acids that our bodies can’t make on their own. I found pure hemp powder at my local GNC for less than 15 dollars a container. I love GNC because if you don’t like the product, you can return it with the receipt. That is a helpful reassurance.
The first smoothie was strange to me. The taste isn’t overwhelming. It is nutty and earthy but the banana masked it well. There was an egglike aftertaste but it wasn’t terrible. The hemp powder leaves a slightly gritty feeling in the mouth. It wasn’t unpleasant, just different. I drank the entire glass and remained full until lunch time. Whey never has been able to keep me from being hungry an hour later. I could have waited even longer but it was a slow day at work and the “boredom hunger” kicked in.
The second smoothie was much better. I mixed it with a banana and coconut almond milk again but this time I added blueberries. There was no unpleasant egglike taste so I may have had an off banana in the first batch. I drank it much more quickly because it was so tasty this time. It kept me full for a few hours until I was ready for a snack. I wasn’t famished so I had some celery and hummus.
I give the hemp protein my seal of approval. I haven’t experienced any bloating. I feel full for much longer than any other smoothie I have drank and It is full of good stuff to make my body work better. There are a ton of recipes for hemp protein snacks too. I am most interested in trying the brownies. They look heavenly. Ok, I still need to work on the sweet tooth. One step at a time, remember?
