Single, single, double, double.

Zumba is a magical thing. I am completely obsessed. Two to three times a week, I will wrestle the kids into the car to go to class. It is more than a class to me. It’s a party. It’s my happy hour. It’s my 60 minutes of sanity. I can’t listen to any music without choreographing moves to a routine. If I don’t get to Zumba, I am a very grumpy girl.  What I love about Zumba is that anyone can do it. Classes always have a diverse group of attendees. Big, small, older, younger, different backgrounds, male, female. We all come together to have fun and stay fit.

When I first started, I was over 220lbs, had two left feet and hid in the back of the room. Even though I felt ridiculous, I loved the attitude of the class. I kept going and the pounds practically melted off. The instructor Cindy is amazing. Her enthusiasm for fitness is contagious. I have rarely seen her without a glowing smile on her face. She not only is a great motivator because she’s been both bigger and super fit, but she’s also a caring friend. She introduced me to a form of exercise that would make me finally love to exercise. Now you can’t keep me out of the gym.  Especially if dance is involved.

I took a Zumba hiatus when I moved. I didn’t like what the gym I was going to offered. It didn’t feel fun. It felt mechanical and boring. Recently I joined a new gym and found another instructor that makes me feel at home.  Like Cindy, Maria embodies the spirit of Zumba. Her energy is electric and it was just what I needed to get back into my groove.

After a month of steady classes, I have taken a spot in the front row. I’m no longer that girl in the back. I love getting complimented on my progress and motivating others. My goal is to keep going to as many classes as I can. I want to join these women as an instructor and spread the joy of Zumba to others.  I have a way to go before I’m at the point where I can feel ready for the certification but it is something I’ve dreamed of for a couple years now. It will happen.

Tonight will be a challenge because yesterday was a major leg day but the goal is to have fun and enjoy myself. That will happen no matter what.
